Brother, an expert in printing, identification and digitization solutions, and its strategic partner FM Logistic are celebrating their third year of using green hydrogen in their logistics operations. This initiative, a pioneer in the sector, has led to a significant reduction in CO₂ emissions in the movement of goods within the warehouse, consolidating the commitment of both companies to sustainability and decarbonization.
For more than 15 years, Brother and FM Logistic have been working together on optimizing logistics processes with a sustainable approach. Since 2022, FM Logistic has incorporated green hydrogen as an energy source for the fleet of forklifts used in Brother’s operations and other customers at the Illescas logistics platform, thanks to the installation of an innovative solar-powered hydrogen station. This technology, which uses only water to generate energy, represents a step forward in reducing the company’s environmental impact.
The electricity used to produce this hydrogen comes from photovoltaic panels located on the surface of FM Logistic’s warehouse, ensuring that it is a 100% renewable energy source. Recently, FM Logistic has expanded its solar capacity, allowing it to cover 69% of the center’s current consumption.
The nominal production of the hydrogen plant, i.e., 100% year-round operation, is 2,430 kg of green hydrogen. This production capacity is equivalent to the consumption of 18 pallet trucks or similar operating 12 hours a day. The hydrogenerator installed at FM Logistic represents a key innovation within the sector, as it enables the production of hydrogen from renewable sources without generating polluting emissions.
“At Brother, we firmly believe that sustainability must be integrated into every link of our value chain,” says Alberto García Clemente, director of operations at Brother Iberia. “The incorporation of green hydrogen in our logistics operations is undoubtedly another example of our efforts to reduce our carbon footprint and operate more efficiently and responsibly. Our collaboration with FM Logistic allows us to move towards a drastic reduction of our emissions, to continue promoting initiatives that encourage a more sustainable and efficient logistics, and to reinforce our commitment to the environment.”
For her part, Marta Simón, managing director of FM Logistic Ibérica, stresses the importance of continuing to promote this type of initiative: “Sustainability has been a reality for FM Logistic for many years. It is no longer an option, but an obligation demanded by our customers, consumers and our own day-to-day business. We have a responsibility to leave our children a world that is even better than the one in which we live, and at FM Logistic we work every day with this in mind”.
This progress is part of Brother’s sustainability strategy, aligned with its Environmental Vision 2050, which aims to achieve carbon neutrality in all its operations and minimize emissions throughout the value chain. By 2030, the company aims to reduce its Scope 1 and 2 emissions by 65% and Scope 3 emissions by 30%, compared to 2015 levels.
For its part, FM Logistic agrees with Brother in its commitment to sustainability through its “2030 Carbon Neutrality” plan, with the aim of becoming a leader in the omnichannel and sustainable supply chain and achieving a progressive reduction in its greenhouse gas emissions.
